The Province: Wine Guy on Neck of the Woods

Wednesday, August 10th, 2011

As we ease into the B.C. Day long weekend, it’s fitting to gather around the dogwood and salute our province with a homegrown bottle. Now the Okanagan Valley is the largest and most celebrated of B.C. wine regions, but it’s certainly not the only local area sporting vineyards. Likewise, B.C. wine is more than just globe-trotting grapes such as Merlot and Chardonnay. A little exploration turns up wineries off the beaten path as well as quirky grapes, and this week we salute beautiful British Columbia with a three-bottle tour of more unusual wines that hail from Oliver’s Golden Mile, out west in the Fraser Valley, and across the Strait of Georgia. Good taste in our Neck of the Woods

Wednesday, August 10th, 2011

A new winery has been established in south Langley to compliment the three other wineries in the area. Within a 10minute drive, you can now visit top B.C. wineries that produce stellar wines.

Along with Domaine de Chaberton, Township 7 and Vista D’oro, Neck of the Woods (NOTW) adds another dimension that differs from the other three.

Owner Trent Blackwell told me recently that he envisions NOTW wines as being accessible by offering quality wines at everyday prices. Blackwell sources his grapes from growers in the Okanagan to augment the locally grown Fraser Valley grapes.

You can enjoy a truly 100-per-cent B.C. white or red wine ranging from $13 to a maximum of $19. This makes these wines affordable for everyday drinking and supports the growing Fraser Valley wine scene. The winery itself is state of the art and the vineyards have been groomed and upgraded since I last toured the location. (more…)

“Best Suburban Winery” in The Georgia Straight

Best suburban winery

Neck of the Woods, Langley. They’ve taken over the space that used to be Glenugie and have come up with some nifty blends and varietals, and periodically some case-lot sales.

The Georgia Straight on Neck of the Woods

Monday, August 16th, 2010

Proprietary wine blends well worth your attention:

Neck of the Woods Winery Paradiso 2009 ($15.99)
Neck of the Woods is the phoenix of the former Glenugie operation in Langley. New name, new labels, new varieties; Paradiso is their nomenclatural improvement on the varietal called Zweigelt, which nobody could pronounce anyway. Try this one chilled or even with an ice cube. It’s very light and berry-juicy but full of fresh fruit, fine for fresh, light cheeses—young Cheddar, creamy chèvre, Boursin with pepper—or those golf ball–sized Okanagan cherries that are still out there. I’d like to see someone fortify it and create an original, B.C.–only port-style wine with it. That’d be the one for the eight-year-old Balderson, or a wedgelet of Mimolette.
